Outdoor Lighting Workshop

Overview

This newly updated outdoor lighting class will cover best practices for lighting a variety of outdoor spaces, including pedestrian walkways, plazas, building entrances, and outdoor retail, sports fields and parking lots. It will cover outdoor lighting standards and codes (IES and Dark Sky and CA Title-24 among others), community responsive design and address light pollution.  Outdoor lighting case studies and a hands-on outdoor lighting design exercise will provide best practice examples hand hands on experiences.

Objectives

  • Learn to recognize outdoor application requirements that produce environmentally friendly, energy-efficient code compliance designs.
  • Become familiar with specific light fixture characteristics and options associated with outdoor lighting.
  • Understand Title 24 energy code and other standards for exterior lighting environments  and best practices for avoiding light pollution. 
  • Participate in a1-2-hour intensive design charrette exercise for an outdoor space that will allow participants to practice their outdoor lighting skills.

Speaker

Bernie Bauer is Principal of Integrated Lighting Concepts and has over 40 years of design experience.  Since establishing Integrated Lighting Concepts, he has focused on lighting with emphases on Retail, Hospitality and Environmental Site Lighting.  Mr. Bauer has garnered numerous lighting design awards and lectures at professional conferences.  In addition, his firm has assisted in the development of the 2008, 2014 and 2019 California Title 24 Energy Standards. 

Additional Details

Pre-requisite text: Participants should posses a basic understanding of lighting basics, luminaria lamps and controls. Some understanding of energy codes and outdoor lighting environmental issues is also helpful but not a prerequisite.
